Ch 3: Terrain Empty Ch 3: Terrain

Terrain should never be ignored in our struggle. It is key to defeating Zeds in combat, but it cuts both ways. You should be familiar with your surroundings not only to gain the upper hand, but to prevent falling into traps and ambushes. The same types of terrain that will give you an edge over the Zeds will typically be the terrain types that put you at risk of an ambush. For instance: walls are excellent cover for humans to use against the Zed. However, walls cannot be trusted for cover until we've checked to make sure that they're clear. This is where we give corners space and circle around to check both sides of the wall. If a horde is closing in, you may then take up position behind the wall and move back out of arm's reach once the Zeds are close. However, if one were to fail to check the wall, when you line up to shoot you may promptly be turned by a Zed crouching on the other side.
So, study the terrain. You never want to be cornered, but you never want to be surrounded. For this reason, we avoid dead ends and wide open spaces. Clear passes like this are beneficial, but passes with brush or hiding places like this are death traps.
